Partner Feature: California State University – Monterey Bay
Global UGRAD is excited to feature yet another host partner from one of the many universities that host program participants during their time in the United States. Sugeyth Ronquillo, Academic Programs Coordinator and DSO/ARO at California State University – Monterey Bay (CSUMB) shares some of the ways CSUMB promotes international connections on campus. 1. How long have you been working at CSUMB? What is your role?
Aside from being a CSUMB alum, I have worked with the International Programs department for four years. I serve as the International Education Academic Programs Coordinator and assist international students with course selection, course registration, and academic advising.
2. What does your orientation for international students involve?
Our arrival and orientation is a two-day event focused on preparing students for the semester. During the arrival period, students are checked into the university and their on-campus housing. Campus tours, city tours, a resource fair, and transportation to the local shopping center is available during this time. On the day of orientation, students will receive a full day of presentations on campus resources, immigration, academic integrity, academic expectations, student life, and cultural awareness.
3. Can you briefly describe a handful of campus clubs, events, and/or programs that are designed with international students in mind?
CSUMB offers over 80+ clubs and organizations available for international students to join. Our office oversees the CSUMB Otter Buddy Program which is designed to match a local CSUMB student with an international student in order to promote intercultural friendship and awareness. We also oversee the International Student Club which is a student-led organization. Participants can take on leadership roles within the club or join for more of a social experience. Another great program for international students is our J-1 Commitment Program. At CSUMB we want to foster an environment that allows exchange students the opportunity to engage broadly with Americans, share their culture, strengthen their English language abilities, and learn new skills or build skills that will help them in future careers. Through our J-1 Commitment Program students can earn awards and certificates by participating and engaging in these cross-cultural events and activities while here at CSUMB. 4. What is your favorite place on campus and why?
My favorite place on campus is main quad. There are benches along the quad and lots of room for picnics! It is also near most of our campus restaurants and café. Our Business and Information Technology building is also one of my favorite places on campus because of its innovative features!
