Fall 2018 Site Visits

The World Learning staff have been busy traveling coast to coast visiting current Global UGRAD students and university partners. Continue reading below to hear about their visits. Thank you to the universities and students for hosting us!

Himani Reddy at Indiana State University and INTERLINK

Himani visited Indiana State University (ISU) and INTERLINK—both first-time Global UGRAD partners located in Terre Haute, Indiana. ISU is a public university with over 13,000 students and INTERLINK is an independent English training institution housed at ISU. Himani met current Global UGRAD students Doni Akbar (Indonesia), Asanbek Kaldybaev (Kyrgyzstan), and Francis Morel Santana (Dominican Republic). She was delighted to learn that Doni is consuming all the information the library has to offer, Asanbek is teaching students to box, and Francis helped decorate ISU’s haunted hallways for Halloween! World Learning would like to thank Zachariah Mathew at ISU and Marisa Brooks and Jennifer Duncan at INTERLINK for their continuous support of the Global UGRAD students.

Bethany Gilchrist at University of Nevada – Reno

Bethany visited the University of Nevada – Reno on October 17th. Despite partnering with UNR for over two years, this was the first time that World Learning was able to visit campus! Bethany spent valuable time with colleagues in the Office of International Students and Scholars and enjoyed learning more about the day-to-day lives of the Global UGRAD participants. Carleton Macajoux (Haiti) and Tam Do (Vietnam) are making the most of the resources available on campus and receiving excellent support both in and outside the classroom! In addition to visiting campus, Bethany also had the opportunity to attend the Region XII NAFSA conference on Friday the 18th. It was wonderful to meet with colleagues old and new to discuss important issues in the field of international education.

Rebecca Crimmins at Valparaiso University

Rebecca traveled to Valparaiso, Indiana to visit Valparaiso University. Nestled just few miles from Lake Michigan, Valpo boasts a vibrant campus that has seen great growth in just the last few years. Rebecca met with staff in the international student and admissions offices as well as with students Dina Hasanovikj (Macedonia) and Wala’a Khanafer (Kuwait). Rebecca enjoyed seeing the students’ favorite places and learning more about their life on campus. She was even able to attend a class with Wala’a and learned a bit about Organizational Behavior!

Will O’Roark at Loyola University Chicago

At the beginning of October, Will visited Jovana Matejic (Serbia) and Thu Nguyen (Vietnam) at Loyola University Chicago. Although located in the urban setting of Chicago, Loyola University Chicago still has a traditional campus with two large quads on its main campus. Will enjoyed hearing about the students’ positive views of campus and their classes and meeting with university staff in the International House, International Student Office, and English Language Learners Program.

Amy Fisher Bruey at SUNY Plattsburgh

Amy visited the State University of New York – Plattsburgh, located in Plattsburgh, New York. Dmitri Bondari (Moldova), Ghada Hussin (Egypt), Olsa Nela (Albania), Tamara Sanchez (Panama), and Nickyson Nyambar (Malaysia) welcomed her to campus and showed her around. She enjoyed connecting with them at their favorite places on campus and observing their close connections to each other as well as their fellow students. Thank you to the international student office for arranging fruitful meetings showcasing the stellar campus resources available to the Global UGRAD participants.

Melissa Oppenheimer at Fayetteville State University

Melissa had the opportunity to visit the five Global UGRAD students at Fayetteville State University. MD Tanveer Anoy (Bangladesh), Valquiria Ferreira (Mozambique), Genesis Garrido (Venezuela), Juhyeon Kim (South Korea), and Chanez Touati (Algeria) spoke with Melissa about their first hand experiences during Hurricane Florence and their impressions of campus. During her short visit, Melissa also had productive meetings with university staff.
